   GI hemorrhage is the loss of blood from the esophagus, stomach, small intestine or colon. While many cases are relatively minor, some are life-threatening or fatal. The risk of death mostly is related to the reason why the bleeding began, along with patient factors, such as age and other illnesses. The evidence for substantial variance in mortality rates due to provider performance is weak. This indicator should be interpreted with caution.
