Reducing Risk, Waste, and Cost

Various national and reputable studies estimate that waste in health care accounts for 35% to 50% of an employer’s annual spend. While the bad news is that there are multiple sources and types of waste in health care, the good news is that we members a variety of tools and programs for identifying and reducing that waste.

• National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP). National Diabetes Prevention program – or National DPP – is a partnership of public and private organizations working to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. Through the National DPP, partner organizations:
  • Deliver CDC-recognized lifestyle change programs nationwide
  • Ensure quality and adherence to proven standards
  • Train community organizations that can run the lifestyle change program effectively
  • Increase referrals to and participation in CDC-recognized lifestyle change programs
  • Increase coverage by employers and public and private insurers
• Pharmacy Benefits Program. When it comes to purchasing, size matters - a great deal. That is why CBGH offers members the opportunity to participate in the nation’s largest pharmacy benefits management program offered through a sister coalition, Employers Health. Through Employers Health, over 240 employers have joined together to group purchase pharmaceuticals. Additionally, the Employers Health PBM is overseen by a governing board comprised of knowledgeable employers looking out for each other and constantly improving the value for clients.
• Savings Calculators. Want to calculate how much your organization might save through improving employee risk factors, using hospitals that have higher safety scores, or by carving out your pharmacy benefits management program?
  • National Diabetes Prevention Program: Economic Assessment Tool
    • The CDPHE sponsored the development of the NDPP Economic Assessment Tool with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The purpose of this tool is to provide self-insured employers and other stakeholders in Colorado the ability to assess the economic implications of offering the National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) as an employee benefit. The tool was developed by researchers from the University of Colorado School of Medicine under contract with the Colorado Business Group on Health.

  • “Lost Lives and Dollars Calculator.” Using Leapfrog’s groundbreaking Lives and Dollars Lost risk calculator, employers and purchasers can: 1) Estimate the number of avoidable deaths among their covered lives; 2) Identify the hidden surcharge paid for each inpatient admission due to hospital acquired complications; and 3) Calculate how much of their total health care spend goes to medical mistakes.
